I love coming up with new ways to use Sailor Jerry Rum bottles and their labels for different crafts, but I realized the lids are never getting used. I decided to challenge myself with finding multiple ways to use them and found it was actually pretty simple. Here’s a few tutorials on the items I created, but there are many possibilities with them, so get creative!
…..
Supplies:
Sailor Jerry Rum lids
Wire cutters or industrial scissors
Hammer
(1.) Start by cutting up the side of the lid until you reach the top indent of the lid. (2.) Make a small cut parallel with the top of the lid. So far your cuts should make an upside down ‘L’ shape. For the next part you might want to wear gardening gloves or safety gloves to protect from cuts from the sharp edges of the lid. (3.) Pull at the cuts you made on the lid until it slowly starts to unravel from the top. (4.) If it starts to get off course and tear up towards the face of the cap (the anchor) just use your scissors or wire cutters to make a small cut to correct it and keep it unraveling around the cap.
(5.) Once you’ve removed the side from the cap, (6.) lay the cap face down and use a hammer to carefully bend the edges inward. (7.) Lightly tap with the hammer until edges are flattened down and smooth. (8.) If you feel any rough edges sticking up, put a little more muscle into it and hammer them down! You should have a flat and smooth button-like piece now.
The first way I used mine was to create cupcake toppers and garnish sticks!
You’ll need:
Wooden skewers
Wire cutters or industrial scissors
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Cut the skewers in half, place a dab of hot glue on the back of your lid/button, and press the end of the stick into the hot glue. Hold for 20-30 seconds or until glue sets up.

The next item I made was a simple hair clip!
You’ll need:
Metal hair clip or barrette
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Place a dab of hot glue on the top of the clip, stick the cap down, and hold for 20-30 seconds or until the glue sets up. I definitely plan on making more of these, but using it in the center of fake flowers instead to make a retro pin-up hair flower!
And the last item I made was a one-of-a-kind Sailor Jerry necklace pendant!
You’ll need:
Thumb tack
Jewelry ring
Necklace chain
Pliers
Stick the thumbtack through the top of the lid (the anchor hole works perfect for this!) and make a hole big enough for your jewelry ring. Slip the ring through the lid and necklace chain and pinch closed with your fingers or pliers.
How will you be using yours?!
