Refillable Catnip Heart Toy
Most of us treat our pets like little fur children and that’s totally okay, so long as you don’t have 24 cats, never change out of your bathrobe, and you dress them up.. With Valentine’s Day coming up I thought it would be fun to make something for Punk and since a friend just gave us a HUGE bag of catnip, I couldn’t think of anything more perfect! Don’t worry all my non-sewers! There’s a no-sew way of doing this too!
…..
Supplies:
1 sheet of felt (found in most craft stores for $1.09)
Heart template (draw or print one out)
Marker
Scissors
Needle and thread
Fabric glue
Velcro fasteners (check the office supply section at most grocery stores)
Plastic bag
Dried catnip
(1.) Using your marker, trace hearts out on back of the felt and cut them out.
Flip them over so you’re working with the back of the felt. (2.) Place a dab of fabric glue on the back of each Velcro fastener and (3.) place at the top of the heart. Most fasteners will come with sticky backing already, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t come off after several uses. Let dry for 30-45 minutes.
For my non-sewers: Run a line of fabric glue around the edges of one of the hearts and place the other one on top. Press down on the edges and set aside to dry for 30-45 minutes. Don’t worry if some of the glue seeps through, it will dry clear.
For my sewers: Press the two hearts together so the Velcro holds them. (4.) Start at the bottom of the heart from the inside to hide your starting knot (5.) and continue to stitch around the edges. (6.) When you get to the edge of the Velcro patch, loop thread around a few times to reinforce the stitch nearest the opening. (7.) Tie a few knots and snip off extra thread. Start at the bottom of the heart again and repeat on opposite side.
(8.) Cut strips off of a plastic bag (9.) and feed them into your felt heart. This will give it some shape and a nice crinkle that the cats will love!
Add some catnip, pinch the opening closed, and watch your cat go crazy!
As you can see, she’s in love <3
Happy (early!) Valentine’s Day from Punk and Tattooed Martha!
