Every December I have this day dream of spending an entire day listening to classic Christmas music, putting up the tree, and baking and decorating hundreds of Christmas cookies. REALITY CHECK: I don’t have that kind of time in my schedule right now! Instead I came up with a quick and easy alternative that doubles as a DIY gift for friends and family.. hot chocolate spoons! It took me 20 minutes to make six of them and I had just as much fun decorating them as I would have cookies. And not to worry.. you don’t have to give away half your spoons out of your silverware set to make them. Just visit your local thrift store and grab a handful to use for gifting.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
1/4 cup milk chocolate chips
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
Toppings:
Crushed candy canes
Red hots
Sprinkles
Mini marshmallows
Chocolate covered espresso beans
and whatever else your little heart desires!
Each 1/4 cup of chocolate chips will make enough to fill two large spoons. Adjust your amounts according to how many you’ll be making.
Line a large plate or baking sheet with wax paper and prop the ends of the spoons up to keep them level. I used the caps from the sprinkles I used.
Heat dark chocolate chips in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until completely melted and smooth.
Spoon the melted chocolate into your prepared spoons. Add sprinkles or other toppings, then place in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or until chocolate hardens.
Repeat with the remaining types of chocolate.
If you’re gifting you can place the spoons in a mug, cover with cellophane, and tie them up with a ribbon.
When ready to use, just stir them in a mug of hot chocolate for an extra dose of chocolate!
Enjoy!
