For years I’ve been enjoying mugs full of delicious hot cocoa that I had convinced myself could not be improved anymore… then I came across Smitten Kitchen’s Decadent Hot Chocolate Mix recipe and realized I’d been doing it all wrong.. Rich, frothy, chocolatey amazingness so easy to make that there’s no excuse for why you would ever have to buy store bought mix again! It was so good that I didn’t even bother with adding marshmallows!
Of course I had to add my own spin to it by adding a smidgen of Sailor Jerry Rum to the mix itself… and then a healthy dose into my mug as well. 😉 Spiked or not, any chocolate lover will rejoice over this recipe and it makes the perfect last minute gift for your loved ones!

Recipe adapted from Smitten Kitchen
Ingredients:
¼ cup + 2 Tbs semi-sweet chocolate chips
½ cup sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Tbs cornstarch
½ tsp Sailor Jerry Rum (or ¼ tsp vanilla extract)
A pinch of fine sea salt
Place chocolate chips into a food processor and pulse until small crumbs. You can also finely chop with a knife if you don’t have a processor on hand.
Add remaining ingredients to the processor (or whisk in a large bowl) and process until mixed. Transfer to a sealing jar or container. Package up as gifts or keep it all to yourself! The mix will hold for approximately two months.
When ready to use, heat one cup of milk in a saucepan over medium heat. When hot, whisk in 3 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix until completely dissolved. Bring mix to a simmer and then pour into mugs. Add a shot of Sailor Jerry Rum for extra “warmth,” marshmallows for added sweetness, and/or a candy cane for a kick of peppermint!
Enjoy responsibly!
