Beer bread was one of my favorite recipes growing up. Not only did my mom make delicious bread, but I think I thought it was fun or naughty that I could have beer! Much to my adolescent disappointment… you cannot get drunk off beer bread. Bummer right? As an adult it’s still one of my favorites and I love to experiment with different variations of it. The latest concoction is using Angry Orchard’s Hard Cider which has a great crisp apple taste. The result was better than expected! I added chunks of fresh honey crisp apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar to compliment the cider. It’s fluffy yet still dense and moist with just the right amount of sweetness. Added bonus: Your house will smell amazing!
……
Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup brown sugar
4 ½ tsp baking powder
1 ½ tsp salt
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 twelve ounce bottle of Angry Orchard’s Hard Cider in Crisp Apple
1 large Honey Crisp Apple, finely chopped (should amount to approximately 2 cups)
Extra brown sugar to sprinkle on top
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C) and lightly butter a 9×5” bread pan.
(1.) In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. (2.) Slowly pour in hard cider. (3.) Gently stir to mix. (4.) Fold in chopped apple and mix dough until all dry ingredients are incorporated in.
(5.) Once dough comes together, (6.) transfer to prepared baking pan and smooth until even. (7.) Sprinkle a bit of brown sugar on top and place in the oven. (8.) Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Place on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. Turn pan over to release the loaf to your hand and then place right side up on the cooling rack to cool another 5 minutes.
Slice it up and serve right away!
And of course.. don’t forget to wash it down with another Angry Orchard! 😉
Enjoy!

i was wondering if you had tried to freeze this bread or how you think it would turn out if I made a bunch and froze until Christmas?
Sasha says
Hi Jeanine! I haven’t tried freezing this bread so I can’t say what the outcome would be. Most times when bread is frozen it seems to dry it up a bit, but since this particular bread is so moist and dense, you may not run into that issue! My suggestion would be to give it a trial run and freeze for a week. Let it thaw in the refrigerator for a day and then finally at room temperature. As long as you keep it airtight during the freeze it should hold up pretty well! 🙂 Let me know how it goes!

I made this the other day, and it was delicious! I also added some of those Kraft Caramel Bits to it (I’m a sucker for caramel + apples)

I am so glad I stumbled across this recipe…and your blog. Making this tonight to go into an auction basket of baked goods for my son’s school tomorrow morning. Hard Apple Cider is a new fave of mine…can’t wait to try it out this way!

I just pulled my first batch out of the oven. I recently got a local microbrew cider on tap in my kegerator and wanted to do some sort of bread since I make a lot already. Despite following the recipe exactly, the next go around I will probably go with less salt and more brown sugar. The salt, for some reason is more noticeable than the sweetness. It is still a great recipe, I just need to play with it here a little to see what works best. Thanks!

Thanks Mike! That’s great feedback by the way! Angry Orchard is a very sweet cider so with something a bit more dry I could see the sugar and salt levels needing adjusting. Also, I’m very jealous of your kegerator! haha I could use one of those!

I made another batch and it works well for a dryer cider. I reduced the salt down to only 1/2 tsp (a little more would have been ok though) and increased the brown sugar to 2/3 cup. After it was done I drizzled a brown sugar butter mixture just to make it that much more unhealthy.
I brought it into work this morning and it is being devoured by a bunch of Army guys. You can’t put homemade sweets in front of us without it disappearing quickly.
Thanks!
