Since it’s the last day of the month I thought I would share an update on our container garden! Pro-gardeners.. cut me some slack.. this was trial and error for me as a first time veggie grower, but the experience has taught me a lot and I’m already planning next year’s garden!
…..
I’ve really enjoyed waking up in the morning and taking care of my plants and watching the bees take care of them as well.. they really love those squash blossoms!
And there’s a few other friends I’ve made that I don’t particularly care for, but I leave them be.
It’s also really amazing to walk out on the deck, pluck whatever vegetables or herbs that I need for dinner, and walk right back inside to cook them. The taste is so much more flavorful and fresh than anything I’ve ever picked up from the grocery store.
I had no clue that zucchini and squash grew to have such large stalks and leaves so I’ve had to thin them out more than once now. I also made the mistake of putting beets in the same tub and had to transplant/thin them out so they had their own space to grow. My snap peas and tomato plants were also transplanted so they could have more room and as you’ll see, they’ve done VERY well!
Here’s a few before and afters so you can see just how much everything has grown in the last 2 months!
Before:
Beets, yellow squash, and zucchini in May
After:
Beets now in their own tub
Yellow squash and zucchini still growing like crazy!
Before:
Jalapenos and red onion in May
After:
Just little guys so far, but they pack some heat!
Before:
Cherry tomato plant in May
After:
Before:
Roma tomato plant started from seed in May
After:
I should have transplanted this one much sooner and I would have had some tomatoes already, but it’s growing strong and I should see some by the end of August!
Before:
My garden in May
After:
My garden now!

It may not look that great to some, but I’m extremely proud of my little back deck garden and also a bit shocked that everything is still alive! For someone that kills bamboo, cacti, and the easiest-to-care-for houseplants.. this is a huge triumph!

Nice job Sasha! Did you use special soil or any kind of fertilizer (organic or otherwise?)
Your tomatoes look so much better than ours do!

Thank you!! And nope! Just regular MiracleGro Moisture Control soil. A friend of mine gave me some plant food stuff that I mixed with water and added once, but other than that I’ve just tried to keep an eye on everything each day to make sure it’s staying healthy.

Everything looks so great!!
I really need to get out and take some new pictures of our garden this weekend – our tomatoes are a complete jungle! And out cucumber plant and producing like crazy! I’ve been picking them while they’re small and am going to take a stab at picking tomorrow, which I will definitely be blogging about!
And I relate 100% to the feeling you get when you step outside and see what you’ve grown! It’s so rewarding!

OMG your garden looks amazing! I tried to grow beets but the chipmunks kept stealing them so I gave up. I wish my plants could have looked like that. I do agree that nothing beats home grown – so much better than the grocery store 🙂
