Broken Record Ombre Wall Art

Whenever I go thrift store hunting I always run into this sad stack of discarded albums. They’re scratched, cracked, or a slew of easy listening, Barbara Streisand, Donny Osmond, and 80’s one-hit-wonders. The good news is that I finally found a way to get some use out of those poor albums… destroy them! Whether you want some new music-inspired wall art or you want to ruin your ex’s favorite vinyl.. get to breaking and follow my instructions!

Supplies:

20” by 20” stretched canvas

3 acrylic paints in similar hues

Glass of water

Paint brush

1 record that you no longer care for (mine was Styx – I’m so sorry Styx fans!!)

1 large paper grocery bag

Tape

Hammer

Pent up aggression

Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Now if you’ve ever read any of my other craft posts that involve painting, then you know that I have said over and over again that I am AWFUL at painting! My fiancé is a wonderful painter and tries to help me all the time, but I’m stubborn and I just want to learn on my own. That being said, this is how I painted the ombre effect, but feel free to experiment if you actually know a thing or two about painting techniques! ; )

(1.) Start by painting the edges of your canvas. I used the darkest hue in the color set I picked. Wait about 10 minutes for the first coat to dry before painting a second coat. (2.) Next paint about a third of the canvas using feathery strokes at the end. Wait 10-15 minutes for the first coat to dry and paint a second coat. Give the paint about 15-20 more minutes to dry and paint a third coat. (3.) When third coat dries, rinse your brush and repeat with remaining two hues. (4.) When all paint is dry, rinse your brush and dip into water. Drag the brush from the edge of one color into the other to blend where the two colors meet. Repeat with other edges until you have a blended ombre effect.

Now for the fun part!

Place your record into a paper grocery bag and tape shut.

Place on a hard surface and hit it with a hammer a handful of times (remember to use that pent up aggression!). Don’t get too crazy with it because remember that you have to piece it back together and you don’t want to make it too hard on yourself.

Once you feel that you’ve busted the record up enough, remove from the bag and arrange pieces back together on the canvas.

Once together, move the pieces a half inch or more away from each other so it gives it an ‘exploded’ look.

Going piece by piece, lift one up and add several lines or dabs of hot glue and place back down on the canvas. Repeat until finished.

Hang it up and you’re done!
